洲本市は平成１２年１１月２１日、アメリカ合衆国ハワイ州ハワイ郡との姉妹都市提携をハワイ郡ヒロで結びました。

ハワイ島はハワイ諸島最大の島であることからBig islandと呼ばれており、今なお活動中のキラウエア火山をはじめ、手付かずのダイナミックな自然が魅力の島である。カメハメハ大王の出身地でもあり、王家ゆかりの史跡も多くある都市です。

洲本市とハワイ郡との交流は平成１０年に洲本市国際交流協会が、親善のために訪問したことから始まりました。その後、市内の高校生がハワイ郡ヒロでホームステイをしたり、平成１２年夏には、ジャパンフローラ「ハワイの日」に出演するために来島したハワイ島ワイアケア中学校ウクレレバンドの方ややヒロの中学生が、市内でホームステイするなどの交流を続けてきました。

そうした中、ヤマシロ・ハワイ郡長もたびたび洲本市を表敬訪問して交流が一層深まり、姉妹都市提携の気運が高まり、姉妹都市提携をする運びとなりました。この姉妹都市提携は、それまでの交流をさらに発展させ、ヒロを含むハワイ郡全体と、文化や農業、観光など広い交流を目指しています。

平成１７年、平成２２年、平成２７年には姉妹都市提携５周年、１０周年、１５週年を記念して洲本市長がハワイ島を訪問しました。

​The city of Sumoto and the City of Hilo, Hawaii County, Hawaii, U.S.A became affiliated as sister cities on November 21st, 1999.

The island of Hawaii, known as the “Big Island”, is the biggest of the Hawaiian islands. The island’s untouched, dynamic nature and its still active volcano, Mt. Kilauea, are testaments to the island’s beauty. The island was also home to the great king, Kamehameha, and much of the ruins of his kingdom can be seen there.

The friendship between the Sumoto city and Hawaii county began in 1997 when the Sumoto International Association visited Hawaii country on a mission of goodwill. After that, high school students from Sumoto have been going on home stays to Hilo. In the summer of 1999, junior high school students from Hilo and members of the ukulele band from Waiakea junior high school came to Awaji Island to perform at the Japan flora event named “Hawaii Day” while doing home stays in the area. Meanwhile, Mr. Yamashiro, the mayor of Hawaii county, has frequently visited Sumoto on courtesy calls further deepening the relationship between our two cities and ultimately solidifying our bond as sister cities.

We aim to further develop cross-cultural communication and improve the exchange of culture, agriculture, tourism and more through our affiliation with Hilo and Hawaii county.　 The mayor of Sumoto visited the island of Hawaii to celebrate the fifth and tenth anniversaries as sister cities in 2005, 2010 and 2015 respectively.
